Summary of the Position

The Business Manager has responsibility for supporting the Business Director by managing and coordinating the day-to-day activities of assigned accounts/projects and specific client assignments, acting as liaison between the client, the company, and the various team members.
The successful incumbent will be a Retail expert with at least 5 years of progressive experience in a Retail management environment. He/she will be required to bring strong business management skills to the table along with terrific problem solving abilities and solid communication skills. He/she must also be a highly adept at project management, process management and managing client expectations. A thoughtful appreciation for the creative
process and a true passion for evolving the landscape of retail are absolute musts!

Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Client Relations:

  • Manages and maintains relationships with clients in assigned accounts and prospective clients to understand business requirements and assigned project requirements.
  • Prepares client scope of work/proposals and works alone or with Business Director to develop clear, concise creative briefs based on client briefings. Reviews and verifies briefs with the client and obtains client sign-off as necessary.
  • Consults with Operations Manager on resource availability, resource/hour estimates and scope of work and follows-up with studio work order to ensure creative deliverables and timelines are clear, achievable and managed accordingly.
  • Presents solutions and creative deliverables to clients, actively participating in client meetings.
  • Ensures a smooth working relationship with clients, and identifies/communicates emerging issues or concerns on a timely basis and manages client expectations around process, deliverables and timelines.
  • Assists Business Director in the areas of strategic planning, market analysis, competitive activity analysis, as well as recognizing and capitalizing on business building opportunities on specific accounts.

Project Engagement/Management:

  • Represents the client’s objectives in internal team discussions including presentations of work
    proposals and creative briefs and in creative execution.
  • Accountability to ensure adherence to Perennial branding strategies and delivery to brand
    promise for all client deliverables.
  • Balances the requirements and demands of clients with the workflow of the creative team, to
    ensure profitable Perennial business results for assigned engagements and appropriate
    approaches to meet customer specifications.
  • Responsible for the development of project scope, workback schedule and resource hour
    requirements for proposal and cost preparations, and management of subsequent project
    resource allocation to ensure project is delivered within specified estimates.
  • Accountable for ongoing monitoring of Perennial hours and purchases throughout the project
    to ensure project budget is met, and takes early action (including escalation to senior
    management) where there are risks of project over-runs.
  • Maintains accurate records of all client activities and contacts via status and production
    reports, attends status meetings and ensures clear communications of upcoming work and time
  • Manages and/or prepares periodic client and internal reporting, including budget control
    reporting, project status reports, profit and loss analysis, time billing and project billing.
    Coordinates all required billings to clients with the accounting department. Assists as necessary
    in resolving unpaid and overdue billings with clients.
  • Provides regular updates to Business Director and early warning indicators when elements of
    assigned engagement may require internal or client intervention for resolution.

Team Relations:

  • Effectively manages assigned resources and collaborates/partners with assigned creative team
    resources to ensure on-time, high quality deliverables to address client needs and adhere to
    Perennial standards.
  • Ensures effective, open communication to minimize re-work requirements, and proactively
    contributes to team member skill development through sharing of business knowledge and
  • Where required, has direct management accountability for Business Coordinator(s), including
    establishing clear objectives and expectations, providing ongoing coaching and assistance in
    prioritizing workload, and managing performance/providing performance review feedback.

  • Sound project management skills and ability to recommend resource re-allocation or influence other internal resource allocations to ensure superior quality deliverables provided to clients in accordance with their expectations and specifications.
  • Demonstrated planning, analytical and problem solving skills to effectively monitor and adjust resources to ensure project budget estimates are met.
  • Displays original thinking and creativity in addressing potential client issues or developing unique solutions to meet client needs.


  • Clearly demonstrates ability to effectively work with internal resources to ensure common expectations, direction, and consistent high-quality deliverables.
  • Ability to foster and maintain positive internal relations through open communication, flexibility, and effective problem-solving to ensure optimal client and team results.


Education and Experience

  • Post secondary education in Business, Marketing and/or Retail Management
  • Minimum of 5 or more years’ of progressive experience in a Retail environment
  • Experience in a professional services environment or agency is a plus but not a requirement
