THE AWKWARD YEARS

It's not easy growing up - that awkward stage when it seems you'll never be comfortable in your own skin. When Mendocino came to Perennial they were experiencing growing pains of their own, with a retail design that didn't match their personality. So they asked us to design a flagship store that would become the crown jewel of the chain. Quite the challenge given that we were dealing with an incongruous store footprint left by the combination of three separate retail spaces.

 
A STYLE OF ONE'S OWN

Mendocino's winning quality was their knack for sourcing unique and eclectic styles that reflect of-the-moment trends. We wanted to design a store that would highlight their best feature - the clothing. Our first task was to create unity throughout the space, which we achieved through a streamlined architectural design that combined modern elements with reclaimed and raw materials. Next, we eliminated those uncomfortable dead zones and blockages through the use of staggered walls, bringing rhythm and movement. We even embraced the store's angular layout by playing with rectilinear forms, turning what was once its biggest insecurity into its defining feature.
