Baking a host of traditional German goods from age-old Bavarian recipes with the freshest natural ingredients, Rudolph's is proud of their artisanal tradition and delicious breads. But despite having an excellent product, they found themselves struggling to stand out in an increasingly crowded bakery shelf. Weighed down by an inconsistent brand and packaging presence, the company approached Perennial to add, as the Germans would say, "das gewisse Etwas", a certain something to make the brand distinctive. For a bakery that has been in existence since 1951, finding the right balance between its German bread making heritage and contemporary design to attract a new client base, and increase brand awareness defined the course of this redesign.

 
RISING TO THE OCCASION

Armed with an outstanding product, our challenge was to develop an identity and packaging design that would be equally exceptional. This meant creating a distinctive, confident, and hardworking logo – a new visual identity that made a lasting impression. To further engage the consumer, the new packaging with its German village illustration, communicated the authentic story of Rudolph's history and values. While we added dynamic typography and colour blocking for differentiating bread varieties to create a strong shelf presence, we also retained distinguishing brand elements like the diamonds consumers recognized to give this packaging a competitive edge. By blending the contemporary with the traditional, we produced a packaging redesign that was singularly unique – a delectable German classic, made in Canada.
